Why do we get upset when we hear “that’s fine”?

I don’t know why I get so upset when someone says, “that’s fine.”  It must have been one of those things that someone drilled into my head, as if “fine” was a bad thing.

I mean if someone called me “fine” I would take that as a compliment.  In the dictionary “fine” means superior in kind, quality, or appearance; excellent <a fine job> <a fine day>; marked by or affecting elegance or refinement <fine manners>; very well <feel fine>; all right <that’s fine with me>.

So, if someone says “that’s fine”, then they mean that all is right with what they are agreeing to.  So if all is right, then nothing is wrong.

Makes sense, just needs to sink in.

  1. “‘That’s fine” is non-committal and non-emotional”…DaveA that makes so much sense because the person that always says “that’s fine” to me is just that…NON-COMMITTAL and NON-EMOTIONAL.

Makes perfect sense now…thanks for the insight.

As far as body language…other than the dead, empty look in his eye, a blank stare…there is none

  2. “That’s fine” can have the same context as “Yes, dear”, when someone is not really listening to you, but trying to placate you. “That’s fine” is non-committal and non-emotional in that respect, and could be replaced with “whatever” Perhaps you feel that context under the words and react to the indifference, be it perceived or real.

Try taking body language into consideration, the conversation that prompted the phrase, and the history of that person using the phrase into account before taking it as improper.
